It's hard to shake those sort of narratives," he shares shares. " If you were looking at that one-liner on me in 2003, which was definitely the annus horribilis [laughs] of my life. I made a bunch of movies that didn't work. I was ending up in the tabloids. I don't know what the lesson is, except that you just have to find your compass."
Affleck also goes on to explain that while there were some movies he liked, he just wanted the constant paparazzi interest to go away, saying "I just said, 'I don't want to do it anymore. This is horrible. I don't want to be in this spotlight, this glare, in this way. It's tawdry, it's ugly, it's oppressive, and it's inane. So I'm going to try to get away,'" Affleck explains. "And most of the way I did that was by not acting. I said, 'I'm going to steer myself toward directing. I'm going to do something that takes me toward a place where the work that I do is reflective of what I think is interesting dramatically.' People bring up 2003, and I get it. Jennifer Lopez, and 'Gigli,' and all this s*** just kind of blew up. But, you know, in 2003, Barack Obama was a state senator in Illinois! Okay?"
What Affleck seems to be trying to say is things change, and that people shouldn't be shorthanded into becoming a certain image for the public, especially when they are young and it is very different to their actual personality. Argo recently premiered at TIFF to excellent reviews, and Affleck is proving himself to be a very strong director.

About the 18-year age difference between her and boyfriend Casper Smart, Lopez says, "We just kind of hit it off."
Jennifer Lopez still believes in true love -- and isn't afraid of looking outside her age range to find it.
The three-times married triple-threat opened up about her divorce from Marc Anthony on Friday's Katie.
"You never want to break up a family," Lopez told host Katie Couric, in a conversation that also may have also let the identity of the new American Idol judging panel slip. "That wasn't my dream. My dream was for us to always be together. But things don't work out and you feel it's the better choice. If I didn't think it was the better choice I wouldn't have done it."
Lopez says things are still warm with Anthony, with whom she shares two 4-year-old twins, Max and Emme.
"We're friends. We were friends before and we're friends now. Thank god that didn't change," Lopez says.
After pointing out that she's now tried and failed to make marriage work three times, Lopez laughed, saying, "I keep trying! It's OK. It's true. I believe in love. I believe in marriage. I'm just trying to get it right. I'm like everybody else."
As for her 25-year-old boyfriend Casper Smart -- who likes to be called Beau and who Lopez calls Bear -- Lopez says, "We just kind of hit it off. It wasn't something I was looking for, trust me. But things happen and they happen naturally.""I don't feel any different than when I first started. I feel very youthful, and very comfortable in my own skin," Lopez says when Smart pointed out the 18-year age difference.

Cameras caught Jennifer Lopez and boyfriend Casper Smart all dressed up with somewhere to go as the couple hit the New York City streets for a quaint dinner date.
