Jennifer Lopez's comeback plan Jennifer Lopez may be the mother of twins coming off what she calls her maternity leave, but she looks like her vivacious J. Lo self as she lounges comfortably in a posh Four Seasons Hotel suite. As usual, she's designer-resplendent from head to toe, yet neither effete nor stuffy while discussing the next steps in her career that some are calling a comeback. The 40-year-old isn't so sure about that assessment. There's no denying she's returned to the spotlight after giving birth to fraternal twins Max and Emme on Feb. 22, 2008. Earlier this year, she hosted Saturday Night Live to a favourable response, then guest-starred in an episode of the popular TV series, How I Met Your Mother, earning great notices. Next in the J. Lo's-back procession is her part in the romantic comedy, The Back-up Plan, opening April 23. In the Alan Poul-directed movie, Lopez portrays Zoe, a strong-willed, independent Manhattan businesswoman who decides to conceive through artificial insemination because her clock is ticking, and she can't find the right guy. Enter Stan (Alex O'Loughlin), Mr. Right. They meet just after the procedure. What's a modern woman to do? The Back-up Plan explores that dilemma, mixing farce with satire in what may or may not be a controversial subject matter. That's exactly why Lopez decided The Back-up Plan would be a perfect - it plays off her romantic-comedy si> for good measure. "So many things in this movie is art imitating life," says Lopez, whose character spends much of the film pregnant with twins, and coping with food cravings and major mood swings. All things considered, her return to work with The Back-up Plan was positive. "Yeah, it felt good," Lopez confesses. "It was great to get back on set and remember who I am, because your life becomes all about these amazing little human beings, and you kind of lose yourself when it's all about them." Jennifer Lopez in "The Back-Up Plan". Motherhood has made her both a better person and a better actress, she says. "You discover so many more profound and deeper feelings that are on this level you had not experienced before. It only makes you better as an actor when you try to portray feelings and emotions." If the second phase in the Lopez scheme of things is domestic, Phase 1 was anything but, as most of us recall. For nearly a decade, the actress and singer was the centre of glitzy, and gossipy, attention - for all the right and wrong reasons. Most infamously, there were her failed marriages, her Sean Combs clubbing period and the brazenly public "Bennifer" engagement to Ben Affleck, which became notoriously disengaged. On the professional front, Lopez had a better run - at least for a while. Born in the South Bronx to Puerto Rican parents, the ambitious performer went from Fly Girl dancer on the comedy show In Living Color, to movie co-star, turning heads in 1995's My Family and Money Train. The next year, she had a supporting role in Francis Ford Coppola's comedy-drama, Jack, with Robin Williams. Selena in 1997 gave Lopez lots of credibility, as did her headlining role with George Clooney in the 1998 caper flick, ut of Sight. But it was The Wedding Planner, and Maid In Manhattan a few years later, that gave her box-office clout and lots of Hollywood leverage. In fact, when her second album, J. Lo, made its debut at No. 1 on the charts, she became the first performer to have a film (The Wedding Planner) and record to be released at No. 1 on the same weekend. Then came the knockout combination of the "Bennifer" breakup and consecutive bombs with Affleck - Gigli in 2003 and Jersey Girl in 2004. She did mount a recovery campaign, but it was erratic. Shall We Dance? with Richard Gere was just OK. Monster-in-Law with Jane Fonda fared better, but An Unfinished Life with Robert Redford and Morgan Freeman did not. Lopez also collaborated with husband Marc Anthony on the music biopic El cantante. However, her last movie before the birth of her babies was Bordertown, and it went straight to DVD. The Back-up Plan will probably change things for her. She's also working on her sixth CD set for release in late summer. Videos and a possible tour might come together in the fall, suggests Lopez. She has a few TV shows in development, and is in the process of lining up more movie projects, including a possible remake of the Goldie Hawn comedy Overboard. Whatever Lopez does next, it will be with a renewed but somewhat modified attitude of a protective parent. "All of what's ahead is exciting, and I love that I get to have creative input," says Lopez. "It's exciting but daunting, because I have twins now, so I have to figure out how I am going to handle all of this. "It's definitely a new time," she continues, "but my life finally feels complete and whole. "So now I have to say to myself, 'What are you going to do with that, Jennifer?' And for her first film since coming off her "maternity leave" (as she puts it), she chose "The Back-up Plan," in which she spends most of her time playing ... a pregnant woman. In the film, opening April 23, she plays Zoe, a single Manhattanite who meets Stan (Alex O'Loughlin) on the very day she goes through with her "backup plan" to be artificially inseminated. They meet cute, they date, and when Zoe tells Stan about her situation, the two come to terms with it and fall in love. The maturation of the J.Lo persona from '90s sexpot ("U Turn," "Out of Sight") to dance-single hitmaker to Hollywood staple in dramas ("Enough") and romances ("The Wedding Planner," "Maid in Manhattan") has withstood occasional stumbles — with a lot of press (both good and bad) in between. I knew that when I came off of my "maternity leave," as it were, I'd want to do a rom-com. I also thought my fans would appreciate it. They always express that to me when I see them, so I thought it was the perfect way to kind of come out of the box for the fi rst time. But it's funny, I do a rom-com and somebody will say, "When are you gonna do another drama?" I'm like, "Soon, I promise!" I really loved doing bio pics, like "Selena" and "El Cantante" — for me personally, I think that's some of my best work. I look forward to getting back to those as well. But there's time for everything. You're at a new point in your life — is it tough to find projects you can relate to? After having the babies, I feel things in such a different way — because never in your life have you loved anything like that. And you realize that there's another level of feeling you have never tapped into. I'm at a different level in my life now and in who I am, and in my spirit and soul. Not to get too deep! But even with this movie, I knew it was going to be different from the others before it. I had a new confidence, and a new stillness in my performance that I feel was a result of the kids. How is juggling work and family? The children are awesome — talking and walking and running in different directions. And exhausting me! I go to work to rest now! The kids are such high-energy, so when I go to [a film set] and it's just me, I'm like, "Ah, all I gotta do is remember these lines. I can handle that." And if I get a little nap in there, the day is great! Do you spend much time in New York these days? We have places both in L.A. and New York. We just got a new house in L.A. for our growing brood, and we love going back and forth. Is it true you don't get to the South Bronx, where you grew up, as much? Since my grandmother passed away a couple of years ago, I haven't been back as much. She was always what brought us back there, for holidays and stuff. My mom lives up in Westchester now ; so does my sister. My other sister lives in Brooklyn. But it's always nice to drive through the old neighborhood once in a while. Let's talk about your split with Sony. Was it friendly? Totally. We knew some people would try to paint a negative picture, but the split wasn't negative at all. I gave them seven albums and fulfi lled my contract, and had tremendous successes — over 40 million records. It was time for something new, a fresh start. It was hard to leave — Sony Epic was my whole history. But in my heart, I knew it was time, and that maybe a fresh team and fresh blood were what was required. All the people I'd worked with at Sony were gone; it was all new people I had no history with. At Island Def Jam, we're going to work on finishing this album. Stuff I'd been performing here and there will be on it, the dance cuts previously released. And new stuff. We're aiming for end of summer, but it'll be when it's ready. Music is still important to you? Absolutely. People are always asking about choosing between the two, and it's like choosing between your left arm or your right arm — I really like both! Seriously, I don't want to choose. They're both fulfilling to me in very different ways. Did you know that outfit you wore on New Year's Eve would cause a mini-sensation? I didn't! Ryan Seacrest said, "Do New Year's. It'll be fun." I said okay, then all I could think was, "It'll be freezing; what am I gonna wear?!" I wanted something to cover me from my neck to my toes but I still wanted it to be sexy and rock 'n' roll and cool and sparkly, 'cuz I'd be singing. I told a costumer that, and she said, "A catsuit!" I said cool, just make sure it has sparkles on it. It turned out to be one of my favorite outfits ever. I wore it again a few weeks later for the Super Bowl. At first, everybody loved it. Then, a few days later, opinion turned. Then, a few weeks later, people liked it again. That happens, though, with me. Over Christmas, we were with the babies at Disney World and we were in sweaters and it was like, "What happened to J. Lo? She looks like a mom!" Then I wore the catsuit and people said, "Who does she think she is? She's a mom!" What have you read about yourself that really burns you the most? I never like stories where people say I misbehave or act like a diva, because I don't. Or that I make terrible demands, because those are always fabricated stories, and always have been. But they've become such a strong part of my image that I have no control over it. They're not true, though, and that's always bothered me. But again, at the same time, you have to keep a sense of humor. There's something that people want about that diva idea, and I don't understand it and it bothers me because it's not the type of person I am, but what can I do? It takes on a life of its own. What's always served me throughout my career is that when people get to know me, or talk to me, and they actually get a chance to see what I'm like, it combats the negative stuff — when they get a chance to see who I am as a person and what I'm about, and that I laugh and giggle and that I'm normal.
